The NYSE-listed Hyatt Hotels Corporation will be adding approximately 950 guest rooms across six new hotels in the country in 2012. The global hospitality chain currently owns hotels under the Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt banner and the new launches will be under Park Hyatt, Hyatt and Hyatt Place brands.

The hospitality sector in Bangalore is expected to be tested in the short term as the capacity is being doubled. However, in the long term, the new supply is expected to be absorbed into the marketplace as more development and growth occurs, according to a latest report by realty consultancy firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL).

The rapid development in the city’s commercial sector has also triggered growth of the local lodging industry. Bangalore presently has 7,734 rooms spread across 48 hotels and the present supply is expected to witness a significant increase with 22 hotels in the branded segment coming up in the near future. Bangalore’s lodging market was amongst the best performing hospitality markets in India in terms of RevPAR performance till 2008-09.

The Centaur Hotels’ website, centaurhotels.com, appears to have compromised personal information of its hotel guests, in what seems to be a case of poor internet security protocols implemented by the site. This allowed website visitors on Saturday to obtain and view details of passports, driving licences, pan numbers, credit cards, and other forms of personal identification provided by its guests.

Hitherto, serviced apartments were paying taxes like any residential property. “If the proposal comes through, we will tax them on par with any commercial venture. These apartments function like five-star hotels. They must be considered as hotels and not just residential units,” G Manjunath Raj, chairman of the Tax and Finance Standing Committee told TOI.
